Dental Implant Restorations

The Dental Implant
A dental implant is an artificial tooth replacement shaped like a screw and it is often made of titanium. The process to create the dental implant is a very slow and technical process. Titanium is the material of choice as titanium osseointegrates, this means that it biologically bonds to the bone. The bone tissue will grow around the dental implant and actually bond to the dental implant. The use of dental implants has expanded over the last several years. The process is easier and less painful on the patient with outstanding results.

Benefits of Dental Implants
Dental implants are very comfortable. They are so comfortable that you may forget that it is not a real tooth. No one will be able to tell that you have dental implants as they are beautiful and look natural. You will have improved dental health with dental implants. With implants more of your natural teeth are left intact. The addition of the dental implant will also stimulate bone growth in the area of the implant. The bone re-growth will help insure the stability of the surrounding teeth.

Types of Dental Implants
Dental implants can be categorized in many different ways. They can be categorized by the type of connection on the head of the implant either octagon, or hexagon. Dental implants can also be categorized by the material used either titanium or zircon. Dental implants can be categorized by the treatment stage either single stage or 2- stage treatment plans.

The 2-Stage Dental Implant
This process begins with a surgical procedure. The implant is screwed into the jaw bone. The soft tissue around the implant is allowed to heal for the next few months. In the next appointment the dentist will perform another surgical procedure to secure the abutment. During the surgery the dentist will expose the top of the dental screw and attach the dental abutment to the screw. The time required to heal from this procedure is longer than the time required to heal from the single stage implant. The dentist will decide which procedure is best for the patient.

The Single Stage Dental Implant
The single stage implant does not require the second surgery. In this process the head of the implant is above the soft tissue. When the soft tissue is stitched up at the end of the surgery the head of the implant is exposed. After the time to heal has passed there is no need for the second surgery as the head of the implant is already exposed. For the second procedure the dentist simply needs to secure the dental abutment to the head of the screw. This process has a shorter healing time and is less painful to the patient.
